greyhound By Jessica Saunders

greyhound

she whispers a wail in a velvet lined eardrum
conscious, not conscious, of the who there could hear them
the thrum of a larynx, shut tight with tension
the greyhound’s ear lifted, mock stand to attention
the dog with a cry, wailed as a weep
a single dog-tear streaking down a dog-cheek
and a sigh and release of the velvet soft ear
that folded down neatly, avoiding the smear
of the stream, still dredging ‘pon fur ‘pon pelt
the whisper returned to sender, unfelt

Jessica Saunders recently graduated from the University of Birmingham, with a First Class Honours in Drama and English Literature. Aside from pursuing acting, she currently works as a freelance writer, copywriter and all-around social media person.
