What was it that his fingers got to touch?
What is it that makes anybody real?
 
With incredulity he had to kneel
as though his lack of faith required a crutch.
What was it that St. Thomas got to feel?
 
A squishy God electric as an eel?
A spinning God like ropes in Double Dutch?
What is it that makes anybody real?
 
Was Jesus top banana or a peel
to make the doubters slip and slide and such?

Did he dig into Jesus like a meal
he had to have until he’d had too much?

Could some guy tickle God and make Her squeal?
Which gospel tells you how to drive a clutch?

Sam Floyd lives in the Crescent Hill neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.  He is presently enrolled in the MFA program in creative writing at Eastern Kentucky University’s Bluegrass Writers Studio.
