Hand of God By Sarah Collister

Hand of God

Detroit, MI

Once I saw the open Hand of God
And a nude man perched on it, looking up
In fear or wonder-- who could know
His own hands questioning-- “what did I do?”

I looked up to the nude perched man
And wanted to look away
His hands, punctuated question marks- what could I do?
He didn’t know justice that day.

I wanted to look away
Out of fear or bewilderment, I know
I was done justice that day
When I saw the Hand of God open

Sarah Collister is a graduate of New York University and Master’s student at New St Andrews College. She teaches English literature at Wilson Hill Academy and lives in Cambridge, with her beloved husband, Clinton.
